MapWindow GIS

Randy Irmis just passed on what looks like a very useful, feature-rich, open source GIS application - MapWindow GIS. Because the center of the application is an ActiveX control, this program will be most at home on Windows. I haven't yet had a chance to try it out yet, but would love to hear from anyone who has!

I've not used MapWindow GIS, but I have used DIVA-GIS (http://www.diva-gis.org/) and this is definitely a useful (although less powerful) freeware alternative to ArcGIS. Worth considering.

This is an awesome blog, by the way.

Awesome, thanks for the link! Looks like a really useful package (particularly for preparing those annoying map figures for publications). I'll have to check it out in more detail. And, thanks for the compliment. :-)
